Carers Camp

The Rotary Club of Ipswich City in association with Carers Queensland and the Youth Department of the Seventh-day Adventist Church has conducted an annual Camp for young carers at Camp Somerset, Rotary Camps for Carer Kids or RC4KC.

The media reported that there are many young carers in Queensland as young as 8 years of age who are the full time carers of physically or intellectually disabled parents or siblings. It was decided by the Community Services Committee to conduct a camp for young carers between twelve to fifteen years of age.

Carers Queensland provide contacts and names of children eligible to attend the Camp and the Youth Department of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Queensland conducts the camp in the January School holidays, along with the involvement of Club members.

Some forty to fifty young carers attend the camp at Camp Somerset, situated on the shores of Somerset Dam in South East Queensland.

The camp is a great opportunity for carers to meet with other young carers, make new friends and have a time away from their caring role that they normally could not afford. The camp is provided free to the young carers.

Camp for so many of the young carers is the only week they are able to have away from their caring role to enjoy being a kid. The week of Carers Camp is a week when they do not need to cook or clean or look after brothers or sisters or mum or dad. It’s a week where they don’t have to worry about doing chores or worry whether their mum can reach a glass of water or her medication.

The camp activities included water skiing, sailing, fishing, horse riding, go-karting and other fun land based events.

Carers Camp in 2011 is to be conducted from January 3-7 and is open to young carers between 12 to fifteen years of age.
